Tips for competitors of the World Championships Splash at Carnac
|
For those of you taking part in the World Championships, I have a few tips that can prevent problems. Although the summers in Brittany are warmer than those in the Netherlands, it is not a Mediterranean climate. Moreover, you sail on the Atlantic Ocean. As far as wet suits and dry suits are concerned, the same rule apply as at home. On the water the winds cools you down much more quickly. Make sure you are dressed sufficiently warm. Even in tropical waters sailors wear wet suits. In strong winds clothes also protect your body against scrapes and cuts. Don’t sail with bare arms and legs. The will be sunburned sooner than you expect. That is why you have to use waterproof sun tan oil which offers sufficient protection (20-35), especially on your face, but also on your hands, arms and legs. It is important to drink sufficiently. Drink enough before you go out on the water and take something on board for between races. You don’t really need special energy drinks. Alcohol and sport don’t go together. They easily lead to dehydration. This is also one of the causes of a hang-over. Drink extra at breakfast after a night with a lot of booze. Finally, wear a cap and/or sunglasses. Without them you may get actinic conjunctivitis (welder’s eyes). I hope you’ll have lots of fun and success at Carnac. Annette Berendsen < Back > |
