Combined World championships Splash and Vaurien in The Netherlands

From Sunday July 20th to Saturday July 26th the combined world championships Splash and Vaurien will be held. This event will take place near Stavoren, about 3.5 miles south west of Marina Buitenhaven on the IJsselmeer. About 450 competitors from all over the world are expected.

The Splash Klasse Organisatie Nederland and the Vaurien Klasse Nederland have decided, together with their international class organisations, SCIA and CIV, to set up a special committee for this event. The Koninklijke Watersportvereniging Sneek is also involved in the whole organisation. The KWS is responsible for the regatta part. For this project the Zeilvereniging Workum has also been asked for assistance. There will also be an international regatta jury.

The Splashes will sail 16 races for their World Championship and the Vaurien will have to sail a maximum of 12 races. All the races will be sailed on so called Olympic courses. The Splash sailors are between 13 and 18 years old and the two-headed Vaurien crews are 15 to about 40 years old. About 180 Splashes and 100 Vauriens are expected.

The crews are not only from The Netherlands, but also from many other European countries and may competitors are expected from New Zealand, the United States of America, South America(Uruguay), Australia and the Far East(Hong Kong).

Competitors for the Vaurien World Championship will have to undergo a selection procedure in their own countries, whereas there are no restriction in this respect for the Splash sailors. The Vaurien Worlds are held for the 40th time and the 4th Splash Worlds are, after France and Great Britain, back at Stavoren. The Vaurien competitors are mainly from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany, whereas the Splash sailors are mainly from countries where races are often held on the open sea, such as Australia and New Zealand.

Eurocup Flash
The Eurocup Flash 2003 will take place at the same time and venue as the event mentioned above. For the Flash, as for the Splash, there will be not restrictions for entry. About70 competitors are expected, aged from 18 to about 60. Most of them from The Netherlands, although the Flash is more and more finding its way abroad. The Flashes will sail 12 races on an Olympic course.

Skutsjesilen
Most of the 450 competitors will arrive at Stavoren on the 19th of July for measuring and registration. That is going to be a particularly busy day at Stavoren, as it is the SKS Skutsjesyl-race day. Skutsjes are traditional Dutch sailing barges. This promises to quite an interesting event, especially for the foreign competitors. On Sunday the 20th there will be training sessions. The barge skippers will then have to keep a good watch for the hundreds of dinghies they don’t usually come across on the IJsselmeer.
